This poor guy is 12 years old and thought to be a poodle mix. The pic to the right is from his Freedom Ride on Friday 2024.07.19 when we picked him up from the shelter.
Alex was unable to defecate. When we got him back to the sanctuary, we looked at his backend. We were immediately saddened, sickened and horrified! Alex literally had a wall/dam of matted hair caked with dried chunks of poop and wet poop all over his butt. We started to wipe, pull and cut away as much as we could. Gnats started swarming our faces and we aren’t entirely sure they didn’t come out of his hair. We did the best we could but had to stop because he was starting to bite and we were scared to cut him. We did enough because he has been able to poop on his own.
Alex is going to our vet tomorrow for a sedated medical shave down. This poor old guy has been neglected for a very LONG time. We are so sad for him and we just want to give him a fighting chance

Update 2024.07.20: Ta-Da!!!! Look at our boy! Alex got the best makeover today at VCA Companion Animal Medical Center!!!! Holy moly! is that the same dog?
Thank you to Dr. Watkins, Melissa and Danielle for helping our boy feel 100% better. Dr. Watkins said his skin and ears looked good. His eyes are old man cloudy. His anal glands were full of dark matter probably from him not being able to for an extended period of time. Alex’s blood work was good but his teeth are bad and he’s in desperate need of a dental. He’s such a nice old guy. We are so happy he’s part of our family!!!
Update 2024.09.09: Our sweet Alex went to a new foster home on Monday! We met Miss Lisa at Carmel Public Safety Day put on by the Carmel Fire Department. She saw Alex’s picture on one of our flyers and inquired about him. Lisa is a very active senior lady with one cat and one dog named Toby. Toby has already tried to play with Alex and Alex is enjoying going for walks. He’s eating great and acclimating well! Our hearts are happy! Will we see another foster fail? Thank you Lisa for giving this sweet old guy a chance.
